Telecentre-Europe Summit 2009
The Telecentre-Europe Summit 2009 took place from 14 to 15 of October in Istanbul, Turkey and brought together 90 telecentre networks’ leaders. The event was managed by the Telecentre-Europe Steering Committee and Youth for Habitat, and was sponsored by Microsoft. The Summit continued the success of the Telecentre Leaders Forum, held in Riga in April 2008.

The event programme included simultaneous workshops with open discussions, interaction and plenary sessions in which interesting presentations were provided, adding to these the time for networking during social events like the welcome reception and the Bosporus boat tour.
The first day started with a very warm welcome from the Telecentre-Europe Steering Committee, and a short overview of the network’s background, challenges and outcomes, followed-up immediately by the first three keynote speakers: Akhtar Badshah (Senior director, Community affairs, Microsoft), Richard Fuchs (IDRC director) and Paul Timmers (Head of eInclusion EC). Florin Lupescu (Director, ICT Societal Challenges Directorate Information Society, European Commission) also addressed to the participants through a very short video speech.
After a first coffee break with speed-dating - Accessibility, Employability and Citizenship workshops started as planned and were organized twice during the first day, to offer the chance for most of the participants to attend at least two of the workshops.
Last session of the first day brought to attention the second round of staff exchanges that will be organized by Telecentre-Europe and a couple of useful web-applications developed lately to increase the network's efficiency (Thematic resources repository and Members directory).
Day ended with a boat trip on Bosporus, where we enjoyed a great dinner, music, local drinks and a wonderful view of the city lights.
Speeches from Daniel Ben Horin (from TechSoup Global) and Ramazan Altinok (Head of e-Government Advisory Group from Turkish Prime Ministry) opened the second day in great style. Shortly after this plenary session, Capacity building and Sustainability workshops took place.
Melissa Pailthorp (Microsoft Learning Resources - MS Learning), Florencio Ceballos (Telecentre Academy – Telecentre.org), Daniel Ben Horin (TechSoup Global), and Miguel Raimilla (OneRoof) presented a number of tools and services, that telecentres can take advantage of.
After lunch the session Impact Analysis showed us some of the reasons why we are doing eInclusion. Paul Timmers and Gabriel Rissola (DOT, Spain) explained different study cases and different methods to establish an analysis of the work done to turn our projects into really relevant activities day by day.
Another Euro Café followed with two presentations. Florencio Ceballos (telecentre.org) moderated a final talk show with three guests: Tess Camba (Web 2.0 - Philcenet), Rufina Fernandes (Nasscom Foundation) and Hansin Dogan (from UNDP Programme Manager).
Day ended with conclusions and next steps from the Telecentre-Europe Steering Committee.
We hope that this event and its content responded to your expectations and that you had a useful experience and productive interaction.
